Sack Modi government
(April 2002)
The entire nation is shocked by the unprecedented violence in Gujarat.
Despite several reports in the media about police and other State
agencies being unconcerned about protecting the people, the Centre
has not taken any action. The Constitution provides for the Centre
to dismiss a State Government in times of non-performance. This
is such a time. How many more innocent lives need to be lost before
our leaders take action? The Centre should immediately dismiss the
Gujarat Government and impose President's rule.
A Parliamentary delegation from the Opposition went to Gujarat
and has talked about the absolute breakdown of law and order in
the State. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, has also reportedly
stated that lack of support from the Narendra Modi Government and
police led to the loss of many lives that could have otherwise been
saved. What kind of a democracy is this?
Our national leaders are saying that Gujarat is in turmoil and
the State Government is doing nothing about it. On the other hand,
they are allowing the Chief Minister to continue in office. The
BJP's agenda is to appease its own ideological fraternity rather
than protect democracy.
