Rumsfeld Visits
Delhi, US lifts sanctions against Pakistan
(December 18, 2004)
No sooner had US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld left our country
as a guest than the US decided to lift all sanctions against Pakistan.
The timing of this announcement seems to have come as a slap on
the face for India. While it is easy to dismiss the move as an integral
part of US-Pak relations, it is relevant to India as it came at
a time when Rumsfeld had come to India in order to strengthen
our ties with the US.
India needs to be very cautious about US moves in the region. Ironically,
Pakistan is considered by the US as an ally in the US-led war
against terror when it is the very place where Osama Bin Laden
is believed to be hiding.
