Pramod Mahajan
on Rahul and Priyanka
(January 28, 2004)
The way Pramod Mahajan is trying to make the entry of Rahul and
Priyanka Gandhi into politics an issue is ridiculous and shows that
the BJP is a party whose leaders do not say the same things and
do not have the same stand on major issues. Mahajan's statement
that "only someone whose both parents are Indians should be
the Prime Minister" is completely off the mark and makes no
sense at all. It is also completely unconstitutional, as our Constitution
simply says the Prime Minister should be a "citizen of India."
It does not say "natural born" citizen or a citizen whose
"both parents are Indian."
A person is an Indian citizen by birth if they are born here in
India or if they have acquired Indian citizenship- period. Even
if both of Rahul and Priyanka's parents were foreigners but they
were born here, they would still be Indians.
On the one hand the BJP's leaders like Rajnath Singh say they are
not at all opposed to Rahul and Priyanka's entry into politics and
on the other hand, we see Mahajan making such remarks. The BJP seems
confused.
Also the way Mahajan and company keep saying that (about Rajiv and
Sonia Gandhi) "papa and mummy both lost and so will the kids"
is so funny. Is he trying to predict the outcome of the election?
Secondly, if they (Rahul and Priyanka) don't matter to the BJP and
if the BJP is so strong that the Gandhi siblings entry into the
fray doesn't bother the BJP, then why is Mahajan even talking about
them in the first place?
